What are V-Profile Clamps?

V-profile clamps are connecting elements frequently used in automotive exhaust systems, turbochargers, and other automotive applications where a secure and leak-tight connection between pipes is required.

Construction of V-Profile Clamps

V-profile clamps, also known as V-band clamps or simply profile clamps, are typically made of a steel or stainless steel band that is wrapped around the pipes to be connected, and a closure with a screw that pulls the band together and thus creates a strong connection.

Operating Principle of V-Profile Clamps

V-band clamps are placed around the pipe flanges to be connected with their special V-shaped groove. This groove presses the pipe ends firmly together when the closure screw is tightened, and the resulting force is evenly distributed, avoiding point loads. This results in a vibration- and pressure-resistant connection that is ideal for exhaust system applications.

Applications of V-Profile Clamps

In the original equipment of the automotive industry, they are used for connections in the exhaust system such as turbocharger to catalytic converter and diesel particulate filters in passenger cars as well as light and heavy commercial vehicles.

NORMA V-band clamp STC

V-STC

Did you know? V-profile clamps are single-use clamps. They should never be reused. We explain to you why!

Never reuse

V-Profile Clamps adapt to the flange of the manifold, turbocharger, or exhaust pipe due to the thermodynamic processes during vehicle operation.

This adaptation is intentional to ensure optimal sealing and fit. If the clamp is removed and mounted on a different flange, it will no longer fit optimally and leaks can occur.

In addition, when the V-Profile Clamp is loosened and tightened, the material of the clamp is deformed. This deformation is intentional to achieve the clamping effect, but can also lead to a permanent weakening of the clamp. 

A reused clamp is therefore not as strong as a new clamp and can loosen under high load.

For these reasons, the reuse of V-profile clamps is strongly discouraged! The use of new V-profile clamps is important to ensure the optimal function and safety of the exhaust system.
